Atom

An atom is the smallest unit of a chemical element that retains the chemical properties of that element. It consists of a nucleus, which contains positively charged protons and uncharged neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons. The number of protons in the nucleus determines the element s atomic number, while the total number of protons and neutrons determines its atomic mass. Atoms are incredibly small, with diameters ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 nanometers. They are the building blocks of matter and combine to form molecules and compounds through chemical reactions.
